Flow Measurement: Natural Gas Flow Meters from FOX Thermal Instruments

Accuracy in Flow Measurement Application

Natural Gas Flow Meters from Fox utilize thermal sensing principle, a proven, accurate direct mass flow measurement technology. This high-powered sensor technology performs at high levels of accuracy for a wide variety of gases - including natural gas and oxygen flow measurement applications. In addition, Fox Gas Flow Meters are used to measure mixed gases including digester gas and biogas. Other applications include air, ammonia, argon, biogas, butane, chlorine, compressed air, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, digester gas, ethane, ethylene, helium, hydrogen, methane, mixed gases, natural gas, nitrogen, oxygen, propane, and many more.

Oxygen flow meters from Fox deliver the highest level of accuracy. Fox Flow Meters provide the real time, responsiveness required in exhaust flow measurement equipment and critical oxygen flow measurement applications. Other important applications include combustion processes such as natural gas to heat boilers, wastewater aeration, velocity flow measurement systems, hydrogen monitoring, land fill gas measurement, purge monitoring, velocity limits, and many others application systems.

Theory of Operation

Fox Thermal Flowmeters use a constant
temperature differential (Delta T) technology to measure mass flow rate of air and gases. The thermal mass flow sensor consists of two Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD’s). The sensor elements are constructed of a reference grade platinum wire wound around ceramic mandrels that are inserted into stainless steel or Hastelloy tubes.

The Reference RTD measures the gas temperature. The instrument electronics heat the mass flow sensor, or heated element, to a constant temperature differential (Delta T) above the gas temperature and measures the cooling effect of the gas flow. The electrical power required to maintain a constant temperature differential is directly proportional to the gas mass flow rate.

The microprocessor then linearizes this signal to deliver a linear 4—20 mA signal.

Direct Mass Measurement of Flare & Vent Gas Flow Rates

Fox as Flow Measurement:

  • Nitrogen Flow Meter - Use either the Model FT2 or the Model 10A flow meter to receive optimal nitrogen flow detection.
  • Argon Flow Meter - Fox flow meters offer two distinct products for Argon flow metering. Model 10A and Model FT2 deliver excellent results for applications involving Argon.
  • Mixed Gas Flow Meter - Fox Mixed Gas Flow Meters are used to measure a variety of mixed gas including digester gas and biogas.
  • Hydrogen Mass Flow Meter - Hydrogen applications are served by either the Model 10A or FT2. The Model 10A is FM and CSA approved for Class I, Division 1 hazardous areas.

Flow Measurement Technology: Features and Benefits:

  • Direct mass flow measurement in standard units (i.e. SCFM, NM3H, etc.) or mass units (lbs/min, kg/h, etc) with highly accurate measurement of flow.
  • No pressure or temperature compensation requirements
  • Exceptionally broad measurement range (100 to 1 typical) including very low velocity flow
  • No moving parts and negligible pressure drop
  • A variety of analog and digital output signals
  • Field programmable and calibrated with NIST standards
  • Available in both insertion and inline configurations
  • Available in high temperature and Hastelloy sensor configurations
  • Insertion models for 1-1/2" and larger pipes and Inline model from ¼" to 6" for flow measurement in pipes

The Fox Power Pro Sensor operates at a higher power level than competitive models resulting in improved response time and wider turndown in flow measurement.
