Water is essential to everyday life. Not only do we drink it but we use it to make coffee, to shower, water the plants, wash the dishes, wash our hands and that is only some of the things that we use it for. Have you ever stopped to wonder if the water you use is safe?
When you live in the city, you usually have what is called “City Water”. This water is tested and treated by the city on a regular basis. You will know if there was a recent treatment when you can taste a little chlorine in your tap water. Since the city treats the water you have little to worry about. People with natural well water though have a bit more to worry about. Granted the water from a well can be cleaner, tastier, and cheaper, but it can also have harmful bacteria and other substances that can be harmful to you and others in your home. With regular testing any harmful substances can be removed or at least identified before it is to late, however with our ever increasingly busy lifestyles water testing gets forgotten.
It’s important to know what signs to look for when your water quality isn’t as good as it should be. Here are some common signs to look for:
- RUST: Your water will taste metallic or “rusty”. If this is the case it can stain your clothes and pipes as well as make you sick.
- “HARD WATER”: Your pipes most likely have trouble draining. It could be the calcium or magnesium level of your water is higher than it should be. It’s not harmful to you but it can cause damage to your pipes which will cause damage to your wallet.
- “ROTTEN EGG”: odor and a foul taste could mean that the sulfur level is too high. This to can make you sick and cause clothes to smell after being washed. If you have a Turkey Mound and a well this could also mean that your septic has a hole and is mixing with your well water. This to will obviously make you sick.
- NITROGEN: Nitrogen gets transferred from the air to a plant to its roots to your drinking water. High Nitrogen can also be caused by fertilizers, animal urine, landfills, and sewers. This is especially harmful for Children under six months.
- High Silica levels. While not harmful to humans, this is another cause of pipe corrosion.
A Precaution that you can take is to install a water softener. This is not a fix all though. You should have your water tested at least once a year to keep yourself out of harms way.
